Joan M. Douglas-Fry, AICP, is our Chapter Director, and has served in that position since 2003.
She has been a member of AEP since 1994.
Joan is a Senior Managing Associate with Environmental Science Associates (ESA) in Oakland, where she prepares and
manages environmental documents and analyzes impacts pursuant to CEQA/NEPA guidelines, including EIRs, EISs,
negative declarations, initial studies, and environmental assessments.
She also manages staff planners and subconsultants, and interacts with clients.
Prior to ESA, Joan has been a Project Manager with Parsons in Walnut Creek and at LSA in Berkeley and in Irvine.
She has a Bachelor of Arts in Geography, with an emphasis in Environmental Analysis, from California State
University, Fullerton, graduating cum laude.
She also earned a Certificate in Land Use and Environmental Planning from University of California, Irvine.
She also served a two-year term as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Brentwood, and is currently an active
member of the Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed, a community-based organization that works to restore creek habitat
in eastern Contra Costa County.
In her spare time, Joan enjoys biking - road biking in half and metric century rides and leisurely rides along
Marsh Creek Trail from Brentwood to the Delta at Oakley; and mountain biking around Mt. Diablo.
She is also an avid recreational runner of 5k and 10k events, duathlons (biking and running), and weekend runs
along the Marsh Creek Trail.
She attends art and music events; enjoys exploring California (Pt. Reyes area, Sea Ranch/Mendocino Coast,
Pinnacles, Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, etc.) and has an interest in San Francisco/Bay Area history and
politics.
She was born and raised in Southern California (San Gabriel Valley and Orange County) and moved to the Bay Area in
2001.
In October 2007, Joan and fiancé Mike Fry were married in St. Andrews, Scotland.
